Morecambe Sandcastle Festival

Read Carefully

Rediscover the simple pleasures of the seaside with our 5th annual Morecambe Sandcastle Festival on August 6 and 7.

Brightly coloured buckets and spades, sandcastles, donkey rides, candy striped deck chairs, ice creams and Knickerbocker Glories on Morecambe’s award winning beaches will all be part and parcel of this free weekend of seaside fun taking place on the 6 and 7 August.

Internationally renowned sand artists ‘Sand in your Eye’ will be back again this year to wow the crowds with an array of expertly crafted sand sculptured masterpieces throughout the weekend and inspiring all those hoping to dig up first prize in the Super Sandcastle Competition with a massive sandcastle building practice session on the Saturday.

Come and enjoy a free exhibition of local artist Chas Jacobs’s unique artwork which will take place at the Platform. The exhibition will include his most recent piece which has been specially created to celebrate this popular annual festival. Chas will also be inviting you to join him in the arena marquee for a painting workshop.

Morecambe’s very own Championship Section brass band will be entertaining an audience outside the Platform on both days where you’ll also be able to enjoy a delicious cream tea whilst listening to the music.

Beach games will be provided by Lancaster City Council and Morecambe Football Club and Poulton Children’s Centre will be back to provide activities and entertainment throughout the weekend from a special children’s area on Morecambe Arena.

Children will also be able to enjoy traditional donkey rides on the beach when Trigger, Ginger, Paddy and William are guaranteed to put a smile on their faces as they take them for a gentle stroll along the sand.

On the Sunday, The Lifeguards and the Fairly Famous Family will be bringing original comic street theatre to the promenade.

Adding a musical twist to this weekend of vintage seaside fun, this year’s Sandcastle Festival incorporates the Morecambe Town Council funded Key Loco Salsa and Latino event on the arena with Ricky Martin, Santana and Shakira tributes, originals Poco Besos and Reggiementals and Zumba dance team and guests.

Morecambe’s award winning Visitor Information Centre will also be entering into the spirit of the festival with a seaside themed display as well as being the best place in Morecambe to pick up information on local events and attractions.

But the crowing glory of the weekend, is the Super Sandcastle Competition which starts at 11am on the Sunday. Teams can comprise up to four members and there are two categories – families/under 12s and an open category. The winning teams from each category will win a cash prize of £75 with lots of prizes for the runners up.

Registration takes place on the Sunday morning between 9.30am and 10.45am. But you’ll have to be quick – places are limited and allocated on a first come, first served basis. Entry into the competition is free.

All entertainment and activities throughout the weekend take place on the beach and promenade in the vicinity of the Eric Morecambe statue.

A full programme of events, including Sandcastle Competition details, is contained in a free programme, available from Morecambe and Lancaster Visitor Information Centres (tel. 01524 582808) or via the council’s website – www.lancaster.gov.uk/sandcastle
