Hi Peter,
The one name from your list which I remember most clearly is Nellie Bolton. I think she was a local Independent Councillor and she owned a toy and gift shop in Heysham Village. She was a really good spokeswoman in local politics and was good at 'getting things done' Her shop was close to the square in Heysham Village.
Does anyone remember The Wombles switching on the illuminations?!!

Ah "Do you remember"
In 1962 I was 15 and would be seen walking around the streets of Bare with my transistor radio. All the members of our little gang had their favourite pop singers, mine was Buddy Holly (and still is) Ted Hammonds was the Everly Brothers..(I saw them just last week in Toronto...they still sound great) Pat Collinson favourite was Dion, Christine Rileys was Cliff Richard.
We would listen to Jimmy Savilles "Teen and 20 Disc club"...Is he still alive?
Radio Luxemburg and then Radio Caroline..
Ah the 60's they were GREAT Years!!!!!
Brian

Hi Brian,
Yes, Jimmy Saville is still alive and still smoking those
big fat cigars. There was a documentary on TV about him
a few months ago, and he came across as being totally WEIRD!!
Generally intolerant, and not really a nice man to know.

Hi MPPRH and everyone, just a few lines to say I remeber Willy at the auction at the top of Northumberland Street. I stood for hours watching him and always remember him saying that " this is the last one" and then when that was sold he would find another and then another until he completed the sale and then move on to another thing to sell.
Next. Dear old Colin Crompton. If you have read previous postings you will know I worked at the Winter Gardens during the 60's
Colin Crompton appeared there with Sheila Buxton and David Whitfield and I found them all very nice people to work with. I know Colin upset a lot of Morecambrians but it was all in fun. He even got a tax allowance on his cigarettes.
Nellie Bolton.
Nelly had the shop during the 50's all thw e way through to the 70's in the Village and was quite a character before becomming a councillor but we will not go into that as I know the moderator will edit most of it.The memories are flooding back again.

Dave, How can you make such remarks about Sir Jimmy Savile? He is a neighbour of mine, having bought a cottage in Glencoe. He is a lovely, kind, dear man. He has raised so much money for our local hospital, The Belford Hospital, Fort William. He has been our honoury Chieftain of the Lochaber Highland Games for years, and again raised lots of cash for Lochaber High School Pipe Band for new uniforms and instruments. He has helped the local Handicapped Association, and many other local good causes. He is the most generous man I have every come across. Yes, he is eccentric, but if I had his money, I would be even more eccentric than I am already. And that is saying something! I watched that documentory and both me and my hubby got the feeling that we were watching a very lonely, elderly man. Lets agree to differ on this one. Elaine. PS. I remember the plane rides as a child, always wanted to have a go, but ten shillings a shot was way beyond my pocket money in those far off days. Bye. Hello mpprh! Do I remember the night the Broadway was raided? Heavens, it was raided every Friday and Saturday night without fail. Looking for drugs the policemen said, but it was under-age drinkers really that they were after. I used to get SO cross with my friends. I had a car, and didn't drink and drive, so was always on orange juice. But the moment the lights were switched on and the bobbies walked in, I saw my drink had disappeared and in it's place were dozens of half pints. And all they boys swore to me that they were at least 18! Liars, the lot of them. Elaine. Posts: 57 | From: Ballachulish, Scotland. | Registered: May 2001  |  IP: Logged
