Hello my name is Chris and I live in NY. (USA) The picture is a photo of my uncle and his wife and child. Back of the photo says 5/9/1959, Morecambe. and watermark says ilford. This is all I know about him and the fact that he moved from Poland to England. My mom now 87 does not remember more. He only wrote once or twice . He could have been just visiting as I see Morecambe to be by the shore or he actually lived there. His name was Walter(possibly used a Polish version) Chodacki (now deceased). Maybe someone here might recognize or know of his family. I imagine the children might be close to my age (62). Possibly a bit younger. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also have a photo of his funeral that was sent to us. Maybe someone might recognize the church. Also another photo on the back says BJ Clegg, Buttermere, Morecambe, Proof Only. Was there a photography shop by that name maybe. Please contact me at cconway at frontiernet dot net Thank you.

Hi Chris,
I'm a bit younger but share a similar history. Polish grandparents moved to Lancaster, I grew up in Lancaster and Morecambe, now I'm living in NY.
My parents were born in '53 so I'll ask them to take a look at the photo and you mentioned a photo of the church, I'm sure that we'll at least be able to pin down the locations where both of these pictures were taken.
Take care,
Matt

I just thought of something else. Although Ilford is a place in Essex, it's also a company that specialises in black and white photo film - so this watermark isn't important...
I'm still trying to figure out the street and if that's a church or school in the background.

Thanks for your help Matt. I'm uploading the funeral too. If it is his then maybe someone might recognize the church and they might have records. My uncle was originally from Spytkowice. Where were your grandparents from.

The family photograph certainly looks like it was taken in Morecambe. The houses look very typical. Ilford would definately have been nothing more than the manufacturer of the paper the photo is printed on. There is a Buttermere Avenue in Morecambe but it is also quite possible that the photographer had shops in two locations, one being Morcambe and the other being Buttermere.
Do you have any more specific information regarding names?
Good luck in your quest.

I'm not 100% sure, but the photo looks like it was taken looking towards Euston road area Morecambe. The building on the right looks like the old Sion Baptist Church. Hope this helps you!!!!!!!!! The church was indeed Sion Baptist on, as you say, Victoria Street (St Barnabas is in the West End).
The Polish surname doesn't ring any bells I'm afraid.
Perhaps your uncle Anglicised it like many did.
I know a few Polish families' names locally but not that one. A good source of info might be Luneside Engineering in Halton, Lancaster which was started by a Polish family and employed most of the Poles who moved to our area during the war and afterwards.
Maybe they could look through their employee files and put you on to someone who may remember. There is also a Polish Society in Lancaster which you may be able to contact. Good luck.
Are you sure it says 'Buttermere'? There was a Clegg's chemist shop (I think) near 'The Battery' in Morecambe which probably developed photos.
