Pauline,
Glad to hear someone's on the case other than me!!
Let's get the facts clear before we proceed....
I am 100% sure of its location: higher than Barrys's Cafe but not as high up as B. Lewis's. As I say, I worked there for a short time in 1972, (which puts paid to your memory of it not being there in the 60's) so it's possible it survived another couple of years. Beyond that (as Manuel would say) I know nur-thing!!
Oh, the Wolstencroft's were from Euston Road school!
Keep on rooting!
Take Care

Hi Dave,
I am still on the trail of the elusive Pie Shop and have now got other members of my family working on it, so watch this space.
No, I'm not getting the area mixed up with the Empire Arcade - the high class gift shops there were Lunns and Norman Robinsons. I still think it was up the West End between Albert Road and whatever the little street is called before you get to Regent Road. When I first left school (early 60's) I worked at the Battery Post Office when it was in Sefton Road and I think the pie shop had disappeared by then. Gone but not forgotten!!
I know exactly what you mean about the prim and proper ladies in starched aprons who worked at Betty's cafe in Harrogate. I was at college in Ilkley and we used to visit Betty's, usually at the start of the term when we had some cash!
Thanks for telling me the names of the names of Mr & Mrs Wolstencroft from Regent Road School. Mrs W. had her hair drawn back in a severe style and was definitely 'she who must be obeyed'
Bye for now....

Hello Arby,
Sorry, it wasn't on Victoria Street, it was definitely on the promenade, higher up than Barry's Cafe as you head towards the Clock Tower.
Thanks for your imput anyway.
Regards,

I can remember seeing this pie shop when I was a young girl, I am sure it was on Victoria Street, towards the end of the street. Posts: 5 | From: Morecambe UK | Registered: May 2001  |  IP: Logged

Hello Pauline,
Thanks for trying to remember the name of the pie shop, I'm glad someone else remembers it! Hmmmm Victoria Cafe? possibly but I'm sure it wasn't. Daft thing is, I used to work there! Not for very long, but it was a very prim and proper establishment. All the female employees wore white blouses and starched white aprons over their black skirts - very much like Betty's in Harrogate, in fact.
Regarding your memories of the location, are you getting confused with the Empire Arcade?
Take care,

For Dave Midgley - in search of a pie shop!!

I think the shop might have been called Victoria Cafe, but I'm not absolutely sure. I can remember it very well with the steaming pies in the window and check tablecloths on the tables. It was situated in a block of shops between the Alhambra Market and Albert Road and I think it eventually became a shell shop - perhaps it still is! I can remember going in there with my Mum in the 60's - there was a shoe shop in the same block, and also a rather high class shop selling leather goods and expensive gifts - not the usual seaside tat.
Hope this might help!
Pauline.
