You're right t'was cafe Royal, I worked one time during the school hols at Ashworth's Bingo, (down the arcade to the Winter Garden's fairground). The waitresses from the Royal used to come and play bingo during their break and (without divulging too many details), I used to be treated 'complimentary' portions (of pie), for my lunch Colin Posts: 3 | From: Hest Bank | Registered: Feb 2002 | IP: Logged

Updates to previous questions. Hi everyone, Today I visited Morecambe and guess what, I know the name of the pie shop. It is ----tell you later. It was nice to see Morecambe so busy with visitors and to see the Punks spending all their hard earned cash on their beer. I also called into Heysham Village and browsed around the antique shop and started to talk to guess who? Yes it was Nelly Bolton’s daughter. I told her about the interest shown on the bulletin board about her mother and I think she was quite impressed. Further down Main Street they are selling Nettle Beer again. When I lived there it was Grannies Nettle Beer, now it is Aunties Nettle Beer. Wait for it. Grannies Nettle Beer was brewed by Nelly Bolton’s mother, and Aunties Nettle Beer by her sister. Nellie’s daughter told me that her daughter (Nellie’s grand-daughter) is showing an exhibition of her work as a sculpture in Heysham Church from 13th July to 17th August 2001. Whilst I was strolling down the prom. I called into Huey’s Bar, which is in the old Halifax Building Society offices near Northumberland Street. I spoke to Huey about this page and mentioned the pie shop and asked him if he knew its name and cor blimey mates he did!!!!! Oh dear, it has slipped my memory. We also talked about the mock auction on Northumberland Street and he knew the auctioneer. The name of the café----Da-dah ---is-----Café Royal Anymore questions while I still try to find out about the Cinderella Home? Posts: 29 | From: Chester | Registered: May 2001 | IP: Logged

Yes, I remember the Arcadian! About 1971 whilst working as a waiter at the Midland hotel, I bought a pair of patent leather BLUE shoes from that shoe shop in the arcade just because they were cheap and I wouldnt need to polish them! I was the figure of fun in the dining room I can tell you.. Posts: 44 | From: Lancs/Yorks border | Registered: May 2001 | IP: Logged

There used to be a hairdressers, a costume jewellery/gift shop, a small cafe, a furniture store at the bottom and Lunns at the top. I used to go in and look at the very expensive handbags(I could never afford one). Remember the big Arcadian cafe on the same block. But Lunns was in the Empire arcade and Norman Robinsons was a music shop in Queen St.

Hi Pauline You're right, Cravens was on Yorkshire Street. I'd forgotten but recall seeing it when I was in Morecambe four years ago. A lot of businesses in Yorkshire Street have closed down but I think Cravens will still be there. I think Craven's was on Yorkshire street. Their pies were very good but they sold all types of confectionery as well - also had a little cafe if I remember rightly. It may be still there - perhaps someone will tell us? Bracewell's in Heysham village and Faraday's at Strawberry Gardens were also good grub shops! Pauline.

The best Pie Shop in Morecambe was Cravens without a doubt but I don't think it's the one you mean.

I think because nobody can think of the name of the Pie Shop we should start to think what it should have been called as an iterim measure. How about: The Upper Crust, Pie in the Sky, The Pied Pier of Morecambe. A few songs maybe Lucy with the Pie and Diamonds or I did it Pie Way, or Pie, Pie Miss American Pie or I only have Pies for you or Pork gets in your pies, I look forward to more suggestions. Pie Pie for now, Keith Posts: 29 | From: Chester | Registered: May 2001 | IP: Logged

mpprh Member Member # 9 posted 27 May 2001 08:20 PM Profile for mpprh Send New Private Message Edit/Delete Post Reply With Quote this starts to get interesting. i worked in barry s cafe circa 1966 - 1970 summers and winter saturdays part of the time. originally across northumberland street towards winter gardens was an enormous fish and chip shop .................. later became an amusement arcade. then i`m puzzled because between barry `s and empire were few eating places. there was one , forget the name, lasted about one year. otherwise i think it was only brucciani`s or maybe i have gone ga ga. it is only 30 years ago too ! peter hornby For Dave Midgley - in search of a pie shop!!
I think the shop might have been called Victoria Cafe, but I'm not absolutely sure. I can remember it very well with the steaming pies in the window and check tablecloths on the tables. It was situated in a block of shops between the Alhambra Market and Albert Road and I think it eventually became a shell shop - perhaps it still is! I can remember going in there with my Mum in the 60's - there was a shoe shop in the same block, and also a rather high class shop selling leather goods and expensive gifts - not the usual seaside tat. Hope this might help! Pauline. Posts: 34 | From: France | Registered: May 2001 | IP: Logged
